ESP MX 220

Before the cooperation between Hetfield and ESP, Hetfields explorer style electric guitars belonged to Navigator band.

In the late nineteen eighties, ESP made numerous explorer guitars for Hetfield, which includes a lot of well-known instruments as raised middle finger inlayed EET FUK explorer, dots inlayed explorer having phrases A Year and a Half In the Life of Metallica; pt. 1. These types of instruments had been named EX at the starting and later called MX-220ii.

Explanation of this title:
M- Metallica
X- Explorer
220- a common price tag
II- 2 pickups

MX-220II is a bit shorter than the size (from the strap button at bottom to the end of the headstock), the angular is smoother a bit, the distance between the toggle swap to the knob is a little bit nearer compared to the existing explorer guitars. And it features a distinctive truss rod cover which is parallel to the nut and has 2 screws. The framework of this particular guitar regarding the conjunction of the body and the neck is round jack inserted.

The additional modification to MX-220II is utilizing a metal plate with four anchoring screws to fix the ports. The truss rod cover nevertheless has 2 anchoring screws, but is not parallel to nut any more. No alteration is made to the rest parts.

Later on, during the development of the MX-220II, the ESP adjusted the framework again to bolt-on structure.

The next MX-220II is incredibly similar to Hetfields initial explorer. This electric guitar is belonging to EXPCustom with old fashioned body contour and no serial number. It’s said that there is certainly no serial number and round trademark around the headstock back of the MX-220II instrument.

Presumably, the contour of the mx-220II is done in accordance with the 1958 explorer

Afterwards, the brand new style was named ESP MX 250 II (later on known as MX-II, 250 means the price). The ESP MX 250 II is a bit lengthier in comparison with MX-220II, more pointed at the tip. In early 90s, ESP used parallel round jacks. And in this version, the pick-ups switch is a little further away from the volume control and pickups.

ESP MX 250 II was introduced in Japan, with mahogany neck, ebony fingerboard, mahogany body, poly finish, EMG 81 pickups, and black dots inlays. Regardless of what color you desire, they are usually pricey. You are able to ask for any unique tuners as well as other optional parameters, and you could customize this electric ESP MX 250 II guitar in USA, but they are identified as "EXP custom" mainly because the "MX" is selected for other designs. They've bell-shaped truss rod cover that is fixed with one screw, behind the headstock there is the serial number. ESP batch modified the form of the truss rod cover in '55.

The esp explorer introduced in U.S. are all EXP designs that have two models, ESP and LTD. EXP is of MX-II body, bolt-on neck, the ESP (ESP EXP) edition is characterized by maple neck, mahogany body, rosewood fretboard; the LTD edition (LTD EXP-200) is also of rosewood fretboard and maple neck. It is stated that the electric ESP MX 250 II guitar body applied unique materials in distinct ages; alder used in the early years, and later on became mahogany. The fingerboard inlays also changed, there had been 2 dots in the 12th fret of the earlier LTD model but changed into a rectangle (inscribed with LTD) in later variations.

In 2000, ESP established a manufacturing facility in Korea and produced LTD MX-130 that is much like MX-250II. And the interesting thing is there's no serial number. These ESP MX 250 II had been sold only in Japan. Like MX-II, they have two EMG81 pickups, neck through construction and black color finish. These ESP MX 250 II guitars sometimes may be discovered on Ebay but had been stopped in '03.

Special Series

The initial EX/MX-220II customized inlays series is 1989s "EET FUK", which had been released with a tiny quantity. The 5th fret is a little smaller and there's no step on the neck. Naturally, Hetfield immediately discovered this problem; therefore the manufacturing line was forced to be shut down. It's stated the quantity is lower than thirty. Some ESP MX 250 II body utilized this sort of inlays also.
