James Hetfield

James Alan Hetfield (born August 3, 1963) is the rhythm guitarist, co-founder, main songwriter, and lead vocalist for the American heavy metal band Metallica. Hetfield co-founded Metallica in October 1981 after answering a classified advertisement by drummer Lars Ulrich in the Los Angeles newspaper The Recycler, searching for band members. Since then, Metallica has won nine Grammy Awards and released nine studio albums, three live albums, four extended plays and 24 singles. In 2009, Hetfield was ranked number 8 in Joel McIver's book The 100 Greatest Metal Guitarists, and ranked twenty-fourth by Hit Parader on their list of the 100 Greatest Metal Vocalists of All Time.

ESP Guitars

James' ESP Explorers

Hetfield has been a major endorser of ESP Guitars since the 1980s, and is best known for playing custom-made Explorer-style guitars with an EMG 81/EMG 60 set for pickups. During the mid-1990s, ESP produced the first of his signature model guitars. To date, Hetfield has had six signature guitars (may soon be seven) with the company.

They are all based upon the standard ESP EXP series and were built or overseen by Matt Masciandaro. Meanwhile the EXP series has been replaced by the ESP EX standard series which has a sharp shape for its ends and headstock instead of the old EXP series which was comparable to the rounded shape of the Gibson Explorers.

The difference between the EXP model and James' Explorers

In difference between James' Explorers and the standard ESP EXP series, James guitars have set-necks (glued joint) instead of bolt-on necks. (Our replicated James guitars’ construction is set-in, which accords with the original one.)

Identical to the EXP model

The body consists of mahogany, the neck of maple and the fingerboard (with its 22XJ [XJ=extra jumbo] frets) of rosewood. (The replica of our MX-220Ⅱ also has 22 XJ frets.)All hardware (the tune-o-matic bridge, the stop piece and tuners) is black. (Our duplicated MX-220Ⅱhas black hardware, too.)It has one volume control for each pickup. (Our replicated MX-220Ⅱ has 1 Volume, 1 Tone, 3-Way Toggle Switch. All of these features adhere to the original one.)

In the late 1987 ESP made a few explorer guitars for James Hetfield of Metallica without the pickguard like Gibson, but with almost the same shape. These guitars were originally known as the EX, but later became known as MX-220II.

The MX220Ⅱ

The designation stood for:

220,000yen retail (in late 80s early 90s money)

Ⅱ- 2 pickups

The MX-220Ⅱ body is slightly shorter (bottom strap button to tip of headstock) and has rounder horns than the “current” explorer body. The toggle switches on these first two explorers were closer to the knobs than later explorers, and they had a unique two screw truss rod cover.

MX 220 is the very first ESP owned by James in 1987. James used it a lot, in studio and on stage, so as a result the headstock was broken and repaired many times. It has been seen in use on the recording of the new album during the making of "Suicide and Redemption". James still uses it for recording purposes but has retired it for stage use since 1990.

Our replicated MX-220Ⅱ

In 1989 ESP start to produce the replica of the first ESP guitar made specifically for James Hetfield in 1987. This guitar has special raised middle finger inlays and come in olympic white color. (Our replicated guitars have the same extended middle finger inlays and olympic white finish.)In the ESP catalog is called "MX-220 Artist Series". ESP made I believe 45 pieces before James told them to stop making the guitar.

As everyone knows, MX-220 guitar have been very fashionable then in the world. But this is the most rare Esp Explorer...hard to find today...  However, many fans of James Hetfield are eager to see this guitar again. They thought MX-220 has an overwhelming sense of the past and their idol----James Hetfield. This is one of those guitars that gets under your skin very quickly and will probably make you forget your previous favorites! A phrase "words are not enough to describe it" suits this instrument well. Therefore, we do everything we can to replicate the masterpiece.

These are completely built and assembled by highly skilled craftsman using the best parts & wood selection. (Just as the original one, the body and neck wood of our replicated left handed ESP MX-220Ⅱis mahogany, and the fingerboard wood is rosewood. ) So as a result, our replicated guitar is nearly the same as the original one. All in all, our replicated guitars are quality assured and cost-effective and can save much money for you.

We have to say that the price in our website is not including the original EMG pick-ups. The pick-ups we utilized are Wilkinson pick-ups, which is not simply quality guaranteed but also affordable for most people. Wilkinson pick-ups are what we suggested, for they are cost effective and economical. But if you insist in using EMG pick-ups, we can satisfy your need. Certainly, the price would be a little higher than before.

With a matching price, this guitar is an excellent choice! We are committed to the design production, the output to replicate, the most reasonable price, best service, the fastest speed, best quality, dedicated to serve you. If you are interested in our replica MX-220Ⅱ, please don’t hesitate to contact us. Pictures in our website are limited, and more HD pictures will be provided if you want.

Meanwhile, we also replicate Olympic white MX-220 (without “EET FUK”) and Olympic white “EET FUK”. If you prefer those guitars, please see other products in our site.
